On Saturday David Haye tackles the beast from the east, the giant Nicolai Valuev. The biggest man to ever hold a version of the world heavyweight championship. The size difference between the men is the equivalent of Amir Khan fighting David Haye.
Don’t let statistics fool you. At heavyweight size is relative. While the Russian is gigantic, David is also a big man – a faster, fitter and more athletic man as well. Valuev is a very average boxer and despite his size, not a big puncher. If you want a historical pointer to this fight then look to Max Baer versus the massive Primo (Ambling Alp) Carnera back in the 30’s. Baer the superior boxer and athlete annihilated the bigger less athletic Carnera.
If you want an example closer to home then look at the extraordinary performances of Manny Pacquio versus Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. He completely dispels the myth that a good big un always beats a good little un. But there other reasons to think Haye will come out on top.
Firstly, Haye is a warrior that takes fights he knows he can win. Secondly his hand speed is exceptional compared to normal heavyweights – he made the fast handed heavyweight Monte Barrett look very slow. He is a skilful and confident fighter that doesn’t waste punches. He can pick his shots, hit the target and move on. People should not underestimate the frustration and pain he’ll cause Valuev in this fight.
Haye may not deliver the spectacular knockout he is boasting (kidology abounds) but a win for Haye and Valuev taking a sustained beating, remains the likely outcome.
Either way, David Haye is god for boxing.
